Need a Bodyguard, miss?
My first day in Vancouver I make a big mistake. Walking to China town via Hastings street. Unknowingly I stroll down the street that on the map will lead straight into China town. It takes only two minutes and a hundred meters before I get really uncomfortable. My discomfort is instantly confirmed by a guy approaching me saying: “Hey, you need a bodyguard miss?” with a mean smirk on his face.
Then I see it. The street is crammed with drug dealers, prostitutes, homeless, mentals, you name it. Everyone the city didn’t wanna deal with they spit out on Hastings. Everyone else is just never ever walking this street. It just continunes all the way with unpleasant comments and I grab my bag harder until I finally reach China town. I breathe a sigh of relief.
I comfort myself with a hot BBQ pork bun from the bakery as a I look for a place to have lunch. It’s 21 C, the sky is as blue as ever and I decide to let go of the ugly experience and add it to my list of things you have to find out the hard way. Then I treat myself to a bubble tea, a long walk to Stanley park and a saucer peach, my new favorite fruit.
- Birds of Stanley Park
- Bubble red peach tea
- Cute squirrel on the run...jump.
- Contemplating over this blog post in the sunset
- Downtown sunset on..well, Sunset Beach.
- Heron at English Bay Beach

Found on the net:
“Insite is the first legal supervised safe injection site in North America, located at 139 East Hastings Street, in the troubled Downtown Eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. The site provides a clean, safe location for injection drug use, primarily heroin, cocaine, and morphine.”
I presume they had good reasons to put it on Hastings Street…
Indeed. Be careful. Please.

Well, I made it out alive and with all my belongings but I wont walk that street again, trust me.
I’m sure the Olympics comittee will find it charming for 2010 in Vancouver…
